The energy inside the Viking Theater at St. Olaf College last Saturday was unmistakable. What began months earlier as a group of students with early-stage ideas and a fair amount of uncertainty culminated in a powerful showcase of confidence, clarity, and entrepreneurial grit at the 2026 Ole Cup Pitch Competition.
At IgniteMN, we have the privilege of working alongside these students each year, helping them shape their ideas, build out their business models, and prepare for one of the most important moments in their entrepreneurial journey: the pitch.
A Season of Growth
When this cohort first came together, many of the students weren’t quite sure where to start. Like most early-stage founders, they had passion and ideas, but translating that into a structured business plan and a compelling pitch is a different challenge altogether.
Over the course of the program, students worked through:
- Clarifying the problem they are solving
- Identifying their target customers
- Building sustainable business models
- Learning how to communicate value clearly and concisely
Through mentorship, coaching, and iterative practice, something powerful happened: hesitation turned into ownership. Ideas became businesses. And students began to see themselves not just as participants, but as founders.
The Big Stage
By the time they stepped onto the stage, the transformation was undeniable.
Each student delivered their pitch with professionalism, confidence, and a deep understanding of their venture. They handled questions thoughtfully, told compelling stories, and demonstrated the kind of presence that investors and partners look for.
It was incredible to watch.
This Year’s Winners
The competition highlighted a diverse set of ideas, all rooted in innovation and impact:
- First Place: VCD Zero – A medical-grade wearable device that delivers precision-calibrated air resistance to provide immediate relief for patients with vocal cord dysfunction.
- Second Place: ApexStride – A climate-adaptive, low-cost prosthetic system designed to improve mobility and accessibility for underserved populations.
- Third Place: Banara – A sustainable materials company creating eco-friendly hair extensions made from plant-based banana fiber.
- Social Impact Venture: Ricargie – A social impact venture transforming recycled clothing and rubber waste into durable, modular building panels for affordable housing.
- People’s Choice: Algaecore – A compact, photoactive system that uses microalgae to absorb CO₂ and improve indoor air quality naturally.
Each of these teams tackled real-world challenges, from healthcare and sustainability to materials innovation and accessibility, showcasing not only technical creativity but a strong sense of purpose.

Why This Work Matters
Pitch competitions like the Ole Cup are about more than winning.
They are about building foundational skills that translate far beyond the stage:
- Critical thinking: breaking down complex problems into actionable solutions
- Communication: clearly articulating ideas to different audiences
- Resilience: refining ideas through feedback and iteration
- Confidence: stepping into leadership and owning your vision
Whether these students go on to launch their ventures, join startups, or bring innovation into existing organizations, the experience of building and pitching a business equips them with tools they will use for the rest of their careers.
IgniteMN’s Role
At IgniteMN, we believe that the right support system can make all the difference for entrepreneurs.
By pairing students with mentors, guiding them through business development frameworks, and helping them refine their pitches, we aim to bridge the gap between idea and execution.
This year’s cohort is proof of what’s possible when that support meets student ambition.
Looking Ahead
The Ole Cup continues to be a powerful launchpad for emerging entrepreneurs, and we’re proud to be part of that journey.
To this year’s participants: you showed up, you grew, and you delivered. That’s what entrepreneurship is all about.
We can’t wait to see what you build next.
